Information from the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and HealthCare of the Council of Europe Concerning Umbilical Cord Blood Banking
In response to the increasingly frequent enquiries submitted to the Executive Agency “Medical Supervision” concerning the storage of umbilical cord blood banking, we would like to inform you that you can read an excerpt from the guide for parents “Umbilical Cord Blood Banking” published by the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and HealthCare (EDQM) of the Council of Europe. It contains specific information on storing umbilical cord blood in private or public banks, their quality, purpose and the possibility of using the samples.
You can also read about the advertisements used by private banks and the level of veracity of the information in them, as well as statistics on the actual rates of autologous (this is transplantation carried out with the patient’s own stem cells) or allogeneic (this is transplantation carried out with another person’s stem cells) use of the samples.
