Another Organ Donation Grants Three Bulgarians New Lease of Life

Three people got a chance to live after another instance of organ donation, the sixth one this year and third for Multi-Profile District Hospital for Active Treatment Dr. Stefan Cherkezov in Veliko Tarnovo.

On 28 June this year, a 49-year-old man from Veliko Tarnovo was declared brain dead as a result of cerebral haemorrhage. Despite this difficult time for his family, they made the compassionate decision to donate his organs and help save others’ lives.

On the very next day, the morning of 29 June, three Bulgarian patients on the transplant waiting list got a new lease of life. Doctors at the University Multi-Profile Hospital for Active Treatment Aleksandrovska performed two kidney transplantations, into a man and a woman on the waiting list, and the heart was transplanted into a man at the University Multi-Profile Hospital for Active Treatment Sveta Ekaterina.

The organisation and coordination of this organ donation, the sixth so far in 2019, was handled by the Executive Agency Medical Supervision with assistance from the Ministry of Health.

We offer our condolences to the donor’s family and would like to thank Dr. Vanya Lachezarova at MPDHAT Dr. Stefan Cherkezov, Veliko Tarnovo, the Veliko Tarnovo Emergency Medical Service, the Sofia Emergency Medical Service, the General Directorate National Police, and the transplantation teams at UMPHAT Sveta Ekaterina and UMPHAT Aleksandrovska.
